  91. Most database applications utilize time-varying information, yet
  92. conventional database management systems offer inadequate support
  93. for the processing of such information.  Over the past decade
  94. there has been growing awareness among researchers of the importance
  95. of recording historical information in a database, as well as an
  96. expanded body of knowledge on how to model, store and query temporal
  97. information. The objective of this workshop is to define and
  98. establish a common infrastructure of the discipline and to develop
  99. a consensus base document that will provide a foundation for
  100. implementation and standardization as well as for further research.
  101.   
  102. The workshop will offer the opportunity to identify and define
  103. fundamental concepts and techniques for incorporating time in
  104. databases.  The topics that will be addressed include:
  105.  
  106. -  requirements for temporal database applications
  107.  
  108. -  semantics of time-varying information
  109.  
  110. -  conceptual and physical data models
  111.  
  112. -  query languages, including extensions to SQL
  113.  
  114. -  interaction of infrastructure and DBMS architectures
  115.  
  116. -  implementation issues that will affect infrastructure definitions,
  117.    such as storage, access methods, transaction processing,
  118.    query processing and distribution
  119.  
  120. -  products, prototypes and standardization efforts
  121.  
  122. The result of the workshop is to be a consensus report
  123. establishing an infrastructure supporting both desirable practice and
  124. future research.  The format will be designed to encourage productive
  125. interaction among participants.  Therefore, the number of attendees
  126. will be restricted to 40. Lodging, meal and travel expenses will be
  127. paid by the workshop, for which funding is being sought from
  128. DARPA-SISTO, NSF, and CEC.
  129.  
  130. Invitations will be based on the ability to contribute to a definition
  131. of a widely acceptable infrastructure. Authors are invited to submit
  132. position papers proposing a portion of the infrastructure that they
  133. feel is amenable to consensus. Copies of the accepted papers will be
  134. distributed at the workshop.
  135.  
  136. Position papers should be between 10 and 25 pages in length, and
  137. should include the title, author(s), authors' affiliation and an
  138. abstract. Submitted papers must indicate clearly
  139. how the work is relevant to the workshop's scope. Submitters should
  140. also indicate their willingness to contribute to the final report.
